In the old days, makers directed teams of apprentices
in carving instruments, then performed the final
graduation and voicing themselves. Finally they
applied treatments and finish in the time honored
Byzantine system. We do the same with these fine
instruments, giving a level of performance not normally
found at this price point.

Each is unique, with distinctive antiquing by our finish
expert, Stephen Murphy. We only craft a few of these
instruments. Every one has a beautiful warm tone,
excellent balance, great reserve, and a clear, brilliant
top end.

Wood Treatment
Old violins often show signs of having the wood
treated. We've experimented with numerous materials
including borax, potassium silicate, and other
substances. Finally we've located a material and
carrier that preserves and toughens the wood, while
enhancing the tone.
Sealer
We use an organic gum sealer containing long
molecules to close off the surface and allow excellent
adhesion of the ground.
Ground
We use a fine mineral ground in a varnish carrier. The
ground adds brilliance to the tone and provides a
suitable surface for the application of color coats.
Varnish
We use either handmade spirit or oil varnish with
mulled pigments, natural dyes, and careful antiquing to
make these instruments a delight to the eye as well as
the ear
